Carissime Amiche e carissimi Amici,
giugno è il mese dei Circoli Rotary, meglio noti come “fellowship”. Sono gruppi internazionali formati dai rotariani, dai loro familiari, dai partecipanti e dagli alumni di tutti i programmi del Rotary e della Fondazione che condividono gli stessi interessi: sport, hobby o professioni. Attualmente sono oltre novanta in tutto il mondo. Tra questi “Cultura italiana” e “Magna Grecia” sono Circoli particolarmente legati al nostro territorio. Nel nostro Distretto sono attive una dozzina di fellowship!
I Circoli permettono di creare amicizie anche all’esterno del proprio club, distretto e Paese e sono uno strumento efficace per concretizzare il motto dell’anno “Il Rotary Connette il Mondo”.
A maggio abbiamo continuato le attività a servizio delle nostre comunità attraverso interventi di carattere sanitario e umanitario. La vita dei Club e del Distretto, nonostante il venir meno di molte limitazioni alle libertà di movimento, continuano a svolgersi essenzialmente per via telematica, poiché persiste il divieto di “assembramento”.
Diversi Club hanno approfittato per creare nuove amicizie attraverso gemellaggi virtuali con altri Club stranieri ed italiani, per ospitare relatori di grande rilievo.
A livello distrettuale si sono tenuti due eventi che hanno catalizzato l’attenzione, non solo dei nostri soci ma anche di numerosi rotariani degli altri distretti.
Il primo è stato il Forum distrettuale Covid-19 che, per la prima volta, ha visto la stretta collaborazione tra il Governatore e il Governatore eletto nell’organizzazione, insieme, di un evento culturale non collegato al ciclo della formazione rotariana. Un segno concreto dell’importanza della condivisione tra dirigenti in carica ed entranti che, Alfio ed io auspichiamo diventi la prassi anche nei Club del Distretto.
Il secondo evento è stato il Forum distrettuale sull’ambiente che si è tenuto il 18 maggio, in occasione del 40° anniversario della “Marcia per lo Zingaro”, un evento che ha dato l’avvio alla protezione dell’ambiente naturale in Sicilia. La tutela dell’ambiente è la tematica distrettuale su cui i Club si sono impegnati realizzando numerose iniziative declinate secondo le esigenze locali. Ne ho dato un elenco dettagliato a conclusione del forum, per evidenziare come i 96 club di Sicilia e Malta abbiano operato sinergicamente con risultati di rilievo.
Il Distretto, con la Fondazione “Salvatore Sciascia”, ha curato il volume “Angoli di Paradiso” con la partecipazione dei Club del Distretto, che ha avuto grande successo anche all’esterno del nostro sodalizio.
Ho avuto modo di partecipare, virtualmente, ad eventi promossi da tantissimi Club, a un incontro di formazione dell’Interact, a due eventi del Rotaract e all’Assemblea distrettuale dell’Inner Wheel.
Abbiamo organizzato il seminario Ryla online, in italiano e in inglese, cui hanno partecipato gli iscritti al RYLA di Malta, annullato per l’emergenza Covid-19. Interessata la partecipazione dei nostri giovani e di grande livello gli interventi del PDG John de Giorgio e dell’Assistente del Governatore Roberto Lo Nigro.
Il 27 maggio Giusy ed io abbiamo partecipato, a Pachino, alla cerimonia di inaugurazione del laboratorio di ceramica “Colore & Calore”, cofinanziato della Rotary Foundation. Abbiamo così ripreso a intervenire di persona alle principali iniziative dei Club.
A giugno sono previsti i momenti più importanti dell’anno rotariano: il DGE Alfio Di Costa concluderà la formazione dei nuovi dirigenti con la XLIII Assemblea distrettuale il 12 e 13 giugno, il Presidente del Rotary International celebrerà la “sua” Convention internazionale online dal 20 al 26 giugno e, infine, il XLII Congresso distrettuale, che si terrà il 26 e il 27 giugno, concluderà l’anno rotariano con il passaggio del collare.
Elemento comune e inedito di tutti questi eventi è la loro “dematerializzazione”, cioè il passaggio all’online imposto dalle contingenze. Se da una parte mancherà la “corporeità”, il piacere di rivedere i vecchi amici e di conoscerne nuovi, dall’altra a tutti i rotariani si aprirà la possibilità di partecipare ad eventi cui non avrebbero potuto presenziare.
In occasione del Congresso presenterò il volume di fine anno che racconterà questo anno trascorso insieme attraverso immagini e testi curati dai distretti Rotary, Rotaract e Interact, dai Club, dagli Assistenti, dalle commissioni, da tutti quanti hanno operato in questo anno 2019-2020.
Ringrazio di cuore quanti hanno collaborato alla riuscita di questo anno sociale: i Presidenti e i dirigenti di Club che sono il vero motore del Distretto, i PDG per i loro consigli, la squadra distrettuale che si è mostrate coesa e solidale, lo staff per il grande impegno dimostrato.
L’idea di famiglia rotariana che tutti i rotariani, i rotaractiani e gli interactiani, insieme, abbiamo condiviso creando un’atmosfera coinvolgente e serena era il mio sogno all’inizio dell’anno e voi lo avete trasformato in realtà.
Sarà il ricordo più bello di questo anno di servizio nel Rotary che porterò sempre nel mio cuore. Grazie!!!

My dearest friends,
June is the month of Rotary Circles, better known as ‘’Fellowships’’. They are international groups, formed by Rotarians, their relatives, participants, and by the alumni of all Rotary programs and Foundation, sharing the same interests: sports, hobbies or professions. There are, currently, over ninety worldwide. Among these, ‘Cultura italiana’ and ‘Magna Grecia’ are Circles particularly linked to our territory. A dozen fellowships are active in our District!
Circles also allow you to make friends outside your club, district and Country and are an effective tool for realizing the motto of the year ‘’Rotary connects the world’’.
In May, we continued the activities at the service of our communities through humanitarian and health interventions. Club and district life, despite the disappearance of many restrictions on freedom of movement, continues to take place, mostly electronically, since the ‘’assembly’’ ban persists.
Several Clubs took advantage to make new friendships through virtual twinning with other foreign and Italian Clubs, to host speakers of great importance.
At the district level, two events were held. They catalyzed the attention, not only of our members but also of numerous Rotarians from the other districts.
The first one was the District Covid – 19 Forum that, for the first time, saw close collaboration between the Governor and the Governor-elect, in organizing, together, a cultural event not connected to the cycle of Rotarian training. A concrete sign of the importance of sharing between current and incoming executives, that, as Alfio and I hope will also become the practice in the Clubs in the District.
The second event was the District Environment Forum. It was held on May 18, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the ‘’Marcia per lo Zingaro’’, an event that started the protection of the natural environment in Sicily. Environmental protection is the district issue, on which the Clubs have committed themselves, carrying out numerous initiatives tailored to local needs. I gave their detailed list, at the end of the Forum, to highlight how the 96 Clubs in Sicily and Malta have worked in synergy, with significant results.
The District, with the ‘’Salvatore Sciascia’’ Foundation, edited the book ‘Corners of Paradise’, with the participation of the District Clubs, that was very successful, even outside of our partnership.
I got to participate, virtually, in events promoted by numerous Clubs, in an Interact training meeting, in events promoted by Rotaract and the District Assembly of the Inner Wheel. We organized the Ryla seminar, canceled due to Covid-19 emergency online, in Italian and English, in which Malta RYLA members participated. Interested, the participation of our young people and, at a high level, the interventions of PDG John de Giorgio and the Governor Assistant, Roberto Lo Nigro.
On 27 May, in Pachino, Giusy and I participated at the opening ceremony of the ‘Color & Heat’ ceramics workshop, co-funded by the Rotary Foundation. We thus resumed to attend personally to the main Club events.
The most important moments of the Rotary year are expected in June: DGE Alfio Di Costa will conclude the training of leaders with the XLIII District Assembly, on 12 and 13 June, the President of Rotary International will celebrate his International Convention online, from 20 to 26 June, and, finally, the District Congress, to be held on 26 and 27 June, will conclude the Rotary year, with the passage of the collar.
Common and unedited element of all these events is their “dematerialization”, that is the transition to online, imposed by contingencies. If, on the one hand, there will be a lack of “corporeity”, of the pleasure of seeing old friends and meeting new ones, on the other hand, all Rotarians will have the opportunity to participate in events they could not have attended.
On the occasion of the Congress, I will present the year-end volume, that will tell this year spent together, through images and texts edited by Rotary, Rotaract and Interact districts, by Clubs, by Assistants, by commissions, by everyone that has operated in this year 2019 – 2020.
I warmly thank all those who have collaborated in the success of this social year: the Club Presidents and leaders who are the real engine of the District, the PDGs for their advice, the district team that has shown itself cohesive and supportive, the staff for the great commitment shown.
The idea of a Rotarian family, which, all Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors, together, have shared, creating an engaging and peaceful atmosphere, was my dream at the beginning of the year and you turned it into reality.
It will be the best memory of this year of service in Rotary,that I will always carry in my heart.
